Moot Court, another Peruvian step onto the OECD

The Technological University of Peru (UTP) and the Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI) organized the second edition of the Moot Court on intellectual property. On this occasion, the event had international projection and brought together participants from universities in Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

Moot court is a key co-curricular activity at many law schools around the world. Participants take part in simulated court or arbitration proceedings, usually involving drafting memorials or memoranda and participating in oral argument. Moot court involves simulated proceedings before an appellate court, arbitral tribunal, or international dispute resolution body. Is focused solely on the application of the law to a common set of evidentiary assumptions, facts, and clarifications/corrections to which the competitors are introduced.

The organization of intellectual property moot courts by Peruvian universities is another step from the country’s academic sectors to help Peru’s bid to become a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as building a comprehensive IP industry and regulation is fundamental in such bid.

Currently Peru is one of the most active partner countries of the OECD, amongst the first countries to engage with the OECD through an OECD Country Programme, which was built around five key areas: economic growth; public governance, anti-corruption and transparency; human capital and productivity; and environment. The Programme comprised policy reviews, implementation and capacity building projects, participation in OECD Committees and adherence to selected OECD legal instruments.
