New Patent Online Platform will be Launched
Among the first services that may be available through this system are:

1) Search reports (Peruvian Patent Direction database)
2) Search reports (international databases)
3) Technological alerts
4) Issue of simple or certificate copies of documents
5) Issue of record certificates
6) Automatically programmed periodical searches
7) Access to full text Peruvian patent documents
8) Easy and unified access to recent patent publications in Peru

Access to this platform will require users to previously register, and will allow payments to be done electronically.

A second phase of the PATENTA system is projected tentatively for next year 2012, which would allow filings to be done electronically on a digital format. While these filings are expected to require a local law firm or IP counsel to be designated for such such procedures, among other advantages of the system will be the reduction of paper documents and the ease of access of the digitalized documents by the Peruvian Patent Direction.

Based on our experience we still encourage everybody to contact their local IP counsel for most of these services, where their local knowledge and expertise is irreplaceable and could represent a huge difference in obtaining the expected results.

In any case, it is a positive step in order to modernize the patent work into a faster, easier and more user friendly system, where information may be more readily available mostly to Peruvian users who are not completely familiarized with patent work.

This goes in line with the goals of the Peruvian Patent Direction, now that Peru is member of the PCT, to increase the development and protection of local technology, creating a culture where local researchers get used to access local and international patent documents in order to guide and inspire their research activities.

For Peruvian patent law firms and agents there may also be advantages both in faster and easier access to those services, and in the eventual possibility of reducing the filing of patent documents physically, which sometimes represent a huge amount of paper, time, cost and physical space.

We will keep you informed of the next developments on the PATENTA platform.
