Nicaragua Cancels Concession for Proposed Interoceanic Canal

Nicaragua's National Assembly revoked the concession granted to a Chinese company to build a massive interoceanic canal through the country on May 8th, 2024. This effectively cancels the project as it was envisioned. The canal, which would have rivaled the Panama Canal in size, had been under discussion for over a decade but faced environmental and economic concerns.
The future of a canal in Nicaragua remains uncertain. The Nicaraguan government has not announced any alternative plans to replace the revoked concession. It is possible they may seek a new partner to complete a similar project, or pursue a downsized version of the canal with less environmental impact. There is also the chance the project may be abandoned altogether.
The project was granted to Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co. Limited, owned by Chinese businessman Wang Jing. Critics argued the project would displace tens of thousands of people and cause irreparable damage to Nicaragua's fragile ecosystem, particularly around Lake Nicaragua, Central America's largest freshwater reservoir. The project's financial viability was also questioned.
