Nicaragua focused on infrastructure development with ties with China
With the goal of developing several infrastructure projects throughout the country, including a wider and deeper Nicaragua Canal as an alternative to the Panama Canal, during May and June a Nicaraguan official delegation participated in two of the most relevant global infrastructure activities organized by China’s government.

On May 30th, 2019, the 5th China-LAC Infrastructure Forum kicked off in Macao, with China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Bingnan delivering the opening ceremony speech. “Infrastructure investment and construction are the fields with the greatest potential in China-Latin America economic and trade cooperation. At present, Latin America and the Caribbean have become the second largest destination for China's overseas investment and the third largest market for foreign contracted projects”, Wang Bingnan said.

He also put forward a suggestion for China-Latin America infrastructure cooperation and forum construction. “China and Latin America should follow the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, explore pathways to innovation, and improve and upgrade infrastructure cooperation”.

Also at Macao, from June 7th to 8th, 2019, the International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) held its 9th edition. It’s an international forum which was founded in 2010 with the approval of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. The forum serves as an important platform to exchange strategic thinking and insights, explore opportunities and seek cooperation, having attracted in 2019 more than 8,000 delegates from nearly 100 countries and regions, including about 150 ministerial officials.
