Nicaragua Hosts Conversatory on Importance and Benefits of IP

By Guy José Bendaña-Guerrero & Asociados

In an effort to raise awareness among universities, research centers, and small businesses in Nicaragua regarding the significance of intellectual property rights and their protection and utilization, a conversatory was held in Managua. This event aimed to familiarize participants with the rights to enjoy and dispose of their creations, subject only to limitations set by the law.

For coffee producers like us, it has a significant impact as we register individual and collective trademarks for our products," stated Eduardo Escobar, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Coffee Transformation and Development (CONATRADEC).

Organized by the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Trade (MIFIC), this activity seeks to ensure that even the smallest companies can benefit from the prerogatives granted by Nicaragua's intellectual property laws.

Weaknesses persist in certain areas of the country’s IP system. Limited resources and mechanisms hinder the efficient combatting of infringement. Moreover, piracy and counterfeiting continue to plague various industries, including software, music, and consumer goods, undermining the protection of IP rights and impacting legitimate businesses. Therefore, raising awareness and educating the public, businesses, and enforcement agencies about intellectual property rights is crucial to foster a culture of respect.
