Companies, businessmen, producers, entrepreneurs and government authorities were part of Nicaragua’s first trademark congress, organized by the Nicaraguan Intellectual Property Office of the Ministry of Industry. The event looked to promote and train public employees and creators on IP matters, focusing on the importance of trademarks as a motor to boost the economy.
Currently Nicaragua’s trademark landscape has room to grow and is specially occupied by the food industry -particularly beans, honey and chocolate products-, handicrafts and hotel services.
During the congress sixty certificates of trademark registration were granted. “Today we are seeing business and value-adding ventures that are giving greater importance to the issue of creating and protecting a brand. Today a product is recognized by its brand and its geographical origin as two elements that can strengthen its commercialization,” said Humberto González, director of Creative economy of Nicaragua’s Presidency.
