According to the statement, Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, archbishop of Managua, and Monsignor Waldemar Sommertag, apostolic nuncio of the Vatican in the nation, were invited as guests of the meeting and will mediate in the future negotiation.
Nicaragua has been experiencing a crisis since last April, when a reform of the social security system sparked protests against the government that have caused hundreds of deaths. The recent meeting between Ortega and the business sector was greeted by the US ambassador in Nicaragua, Kevin Sullivan, who called for the "good faith of the two parties. “The US Government welcomes this effort to reestablish negotiations between Nicaraguan Government and civil society representatives. The negotiations will require good faith efforts to achieve real solutions in real time for the Nicaraguan people”, Sullivan said in Twitter.
