Nicaragua's premium rum evokes in Europe its adventurous history
By Guy José Bendaña-Guerrero & Asociados

The company was founded in 1890 by Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a young adventurer from Genoa, Italy, who traveled to Nicaragua and settled a distillery at the base of the San Cristóbal volcano, the tallest and most active volcano in the country, to establish a production process that today still continues under the supervision of the same family. “The fertility of its surrounding lands, the enriched water and the hot volcanic climate proved to be instrumental in forging the rum’s unique and distinguished character”, the company’s web site remembers today about the San Cristóbal volcano.
To showcase such tradition in Europe, one of its most important markets, Flor de Caña has opened a marketing exhibition at the Madrid International Airport with a disruptive and elegant visual display inspired by the San Cristóbal volcano: a 24x10 feet LED screen with slow motion scenes of lava and explosions. The exhibition looks to strengthen the rum’s prestige worldwide, supported by some of the industry’s top awards like Best Rum Producer of the Year by the International Wine and Spirit Competition, Best Rum of the Year by the International Rum Conference in Madrid and Best New Rum of the Year by the Caribbean Journal.
Flor de Caña has also the Fair Trade Certification, one of the most prestigious and rigorous in the world related to excellence in labor conditions, economic opportunity for workers, community development and environmental sustainability.
