During a seminar that took place in Lima in July, Indecopi’s authorities highlighted the protection carried out by its National Commission against Biopiracy, which has successfully resolved 45 cases of Peruvian biopiracy infringement through the international patent system.

The visitors learned about the 69 biological resources of Peruvian origin that the Commission monitors daily in patent offices all over the world. Among them are maca, sacha inchi, camu camu, tara, yacon, pasuchaca, quinoa, guanabana and achiote. The visitors also received information about recent cases raised by the commission, such as the observation filed within the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) against a patent application related to the pasuchaca.

The objective of the seminar was to share experiences in the area of intellectual property linked to genetic resources and traditional knowledge, helping to coordinate actions among the member countries of the Andean Community to avoid the undue granting of patents.
