Peru Reaches Record Patent Milestone with Over 1,000 Inventions Protected in 2025

Peru marked a significant milestone in innovation in 2025, with more than one thousand inventions protected through the national patent system, according to official data from Indecopi. The achievement reflects sustained growth in the country’s intellectual property activity and an increasing capacity to transform research and ideas into legally protected innovations.

In total, 1,369 patent titles were granted during the year, representing the highest figure recorded to date and highlighting a notable expansion of inventive activity across the country. The data also points to improvements in the efficiency of the patent system, which has enabled more applications to successfully complete the evaluation process and obtain protection.

A key trend identified in the official figures is the growing participation of domestic applicants. For the first time, Peruvian inventors accounted for 53% of all patent applications filed in 2025, with a total of 1,220 submissions. This shift signals a strengthening of local innovation capacity and a greater use of intellectual property tools by national stakeholders.

Universities played a central role in this development, emerging as the leading contributors to patent generation. Academic institutions accounted for approximately 78% of patents granted to national applicants, significantly outpacing individuals and companies. This trend underscores the importance of research institutions in driving applied innovation and technological development in Peru.

The composition of patents granted also reflects a move toward more advanced technological solutions. Patents of invention, typically associated with higher levels of technical complexity, represented 63% of the total, while utility models accounted for the remaining 37%. Innovations registered during the year included developments in health, biotechnology, and engineering, such as medical devices and robotic systems designed to improve quality of life.

Another notable aspect of the 2025 data is the increasing participation of women in innovation. According to Indecopi, 59% of national patent applications included at least one female inventor, marking the highest level recorded in the country and continuing an upward trend in gender representation within the patent system.

Overall, the figures highlight a period of expansion for Peru’s patent system, with increased activity from domestic applicants, strong involvement from academic institutions, and growing diversity among inventors. The results position intellectual property as a central tool in the country’s innovation ecosystem and its efforts to support technological development.
