Peru to Join AI Image Search Tool

With the aim of enhancing the protection of intellectual property rights in Peru, authorities from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) of Peru, met with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang. During the meeting, Indecopi representatives outlined several institutional initiatives focused on combating piracy and improving the agency’s intellectual property services.

As part of its anti-piracy strategy, Indecopi announced plans to establish an observatory of intellectual property infringements. This observatory will collect and organize data related to copyright and trademark violations, enabling the development of more effective and targeted public policies. In addition, the agency aims to strengthen its monitoring of e-commerce platforms, where the sale of counterfeit and pirated products has been on the rise.

Another key initiative presented to WIPO involves modernizing Indecopi’s services through emerging technologies. The agency expressed its interest in joining WIPO’s pilot project for the implementation of an AI-powered figurative image search tool. This tool, already integrated into WIPO’s Global Brand Database, allows users to upload logos or images and find similar or identical trademarks registered in the system, facilitating the identification of potential conflicts.

The figurative search engine uses visual recognition algorithms to compare graphic elements, representing a significant advancement over traditional text-based search methods. It supports trademark professionals, businesses, and national IP offices in conducting faster and more accurate clearance searches, streamlining the registration process for distinctive signs.

While the core tool is already public and running globally, WIPO is working on pilot integration programs with individual national IP offices — like Indecopi — to connect their internal systems with this AI tool.
