Called “Lisbon Agreement and the management of denominations of origin and geographical indications in Peru”, the seminar discussed control mechanisms to be implemented by the regulatory boards of the denominations of origin, financial self-sustainability, promotion strategies and international protection systems.
The Lisbon Agreement, which Peru joined in 2005, provides for the protection of denominations of origin. Such denominations are registered by the International Bureau of WIPO in Geneva upon the request of the competent authority of a contracting sate. The International Bureau keeps the International Register of Appellations of Origin and formally notifies the other contracting states of the registrations.
The event was organized at the city of Ica, capital of the Ica Region in southern Peru, as it is one of the main producing lands of the Pisco denomination of origin. Besides Pisco, Peru has other nine denominations of origin: Pallar from Ica, Coffee from Villa Rica, Coffee from Machu Picchu-Huadquiña, Cacao Amazonas, Olive from Tacna, Maca from Junín-Pasco, Loche from Lambayeque, Chulucanas and Giant White Corn from Cusco.
