In 2021, about 1.2 million industrial design applications were filed worldwide, according to the 2022 World Intellectual Property Indicators from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This represents an increase of 6.8% on 2020. Since 2007, industrial design applications have increased every year, except for 2014. Applications during this period have more than doubled, due in large part to a rapid growth in applications filed in China. Among offices located in low- and middle-income countries, the annual growth rate in 2021 was especially high for Peru (+40.9%).
WIPO’s report analyzes IP activity around the globe drawing on 2021 filing, registration and in force statistics from national and regional IP offices. It covers patents, utility models, trademarks, industrial designs, microorganisms, plant variety protection and geographical indications.
One special kind of geographical indication, the appellation of origin, was also highlighted by the report. The WIPO described handicrafts such as "Chulucanas" for ceramics, from Peru, as a globally-renowned example of appellations of origin protected under the Lisbon System, established in 1958 to facilitate the international protection of appellations of origin through a single registration procedure.
