Peruvian Avocado Sector Enters a New Phase

Peru’s avocado industry is broadening its reach into Asia, marking an important development in the country’s agricultural export profile. Supported by trade promotion activities and evolving market access, Peruvian avocados — particularly the Hass variety — are gaining visibility and distribution in key Asian markets.

Recent export data indicate expanded market entry beyond traditional destinations. For the first time, Peruvian avocados have reached Mongolia through a re‑export distribution scheme, representing a tangible example of diversification in export channels toward Asia.

China has also emerged as one of the most significant markets for Peruvian avocado exports. National promotional efforts have included in‑store and digital campaigns in major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Dalian, featuring Peruvian avocados in retail outlets and online platforms. These activities have combined experiential marketing with partnerships in modern distribution channels.

Peru is one of the top suppliers of avocados to China, holding a large share of the market and exporting tens of thousands of tons annually. Transit time improvements associated with upgraded port infrastructure — such as the new deep‑water port facilities — have supported more efficient shipping schedules between Peru and Asia.

Peru is also widely recognized as among the leading global exporters of Hass avocados, regularly competing with other major producers. In 2025, the country’s avocado exports approached 690 000 tons, with established demand in Europe, the Americas and growing interest in Asia.

Beyond China, access to the Philippines market has recently been secured, opening up export possibilities for Hass avocados with established phytosanitary procedures. This expands the destination network for Peruvian avocados within Asia, bringing the total number of markets accessible for this crop to nearly seventy.

The increase in Asian market activity aligns with longer‑term trends of diversification in Peru’s agricultural exports. While Europe and North America remain primary destinations, Asia’s role has been gradually strengthening both in volume and strategic promotional efforts, supported by targeted campaigns and logistics improvements.
