The COVID-19 pandemic has hurried up talks between both counties to find a solution for the trade bottleneck that is currently hitting Central America, with several containers of goods unable to be moved due to sanitary and commercial measures.
“The ferry can be a very good opportunity. We have heard that authorities of El Salvador and Costa Rica are already reaching an agreement that could give a much necessary help to trade operators,” said Silvia Cuéllar, executive director of the Exporters Corporation of El Salvador (Coexport).
Located in Eastern El Salvador, the port of La Unión has increased local economic growth and stability and provide relief to the country’s main por of Acajutla. Golfito, meanwhile, is a tender port located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, built in 1939 for the sole purpose of serving as a platform for the export of bananas to the United States.
