Pupusa from Olocuilta is a Geographical Indication!
El Salvador finally has its first Geographical Indication (GI) after the Ministry of Economy awarded the sign “Pupusa de Arroz de Olocuilta" to local producers from the municipality of Olocuilta.

A GI is used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin, in this case the pupusa, a traditional Salvadoran dish of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with a savory filling. It is mostly created in Olocuilta, a municipality in the La Paz department, south of the country.

The registration of this first Geographical Indication is part of a long standing work carried out by the Ministry of Economy along with private institutions, businessmen and producers, part of an intellectual property strategy that aims to promote and disseminate, both locally and internationally, the most representative products of El Salvador has and especially those products linked to Intellectual Property through Denominations of Origin or Geographical Indications.

Therefore, the Ministry of Economy will continue with its work of positioning national products through Geographical Indications or Denominations of Origin as a key element for national development, supporting businesses and producers that look to add value to is production chains.
