Regional support for new IP tools

The Ministry of Economy of Guatemala hosted a meeting with the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The focus was set on discussing the regional agenda on IP and identifying opportunities for cooperation and assistance.Guatemala is looking to develop new legal tools to promote IP. Despite a generally sound legal framework, IPR enforcement remains limited due to resource constraints, and limited coordination among law enforcement agencies. In June 2006, the country approved the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV Convention). Implementing legislation that would allow Guatemala to become a party to the convention, however, is now underway.
SIECA, the technical and administrative body of the Central American Economic Integration Process, oversees all legal instruments pertaining to the regional economic integration; therefore, the Secretariat will work closely with Guatemala and the WIPO to support this ongoing legal instruments.
