According to El Salvador's Trade and Investment Agency, in 2023 El Salvador expanded the list of export destinations for 134 products, reaching 52 new markets with an exported value of USD 21.7 million.
Of the products that have entered new markets, nine from the food sector stand out, which have entered 10 destinations, including Curaçao, Spain, Guyana, the Netherlands and Singapore.
There were also 17 products from the machinery and equipment sector that entered 13 new markets, such as Barbados, China, Switzerland and Thailand.
Likewise, 13 chemical products and substances entered nine markets, including Belgium, Barbados and Colombia.
In the case of computer, electronic, and optical products, El Salvador has exported to 13 new markets such as Bolivia, Hong Kong and India.
Raw sugar was one of the most demanded products with sales of USD3.8 million; followed by rum, soybean oil, oil-based disinfectants, cocoa beans, spray guns and similar devices, devices for filtering or purifying water, cards and labels.
El Salvador is looking to revamp exports through trade facilitation measures which include strengthening the National Trade Facilitation Committee and the recent implementation of integrated border management tools in its borders.
A tool of integrated border management framework is the establishment of one-stop border posts (OSBP), which consist of a single, shared physical infrastructure in which the customs and border services of other countries operate side by side. This type of structure simplifies the border-crossing process for travellers and authorities alike, and fosters international cooperation and informationsharing for improved border security.
