"It´s a dream that many Nicaraguans yearn for and it´s a proud moment for the country, because this expansion will position San Juan del Sur in the cruise tourism segment, which for us is relatively new", said during the inauguration event César Guadamuz, manager of the state-owned National Port Company.
The project will built an additional 17,000 square meters in the port, including the construction of four new commercial modules with souvenir shops, tourist information offices, recreational parks, picnic huts and restaurants offering typical Nicaraguan food.
It will also improve logistics so than cruise passengers can reach mainland. The IDB granted a USD 2.5 million loan, while the state contributed with USD 1.5 million from the National Treasury.
San Juan del Sur, a municipality and coastal town on the Pacific Ocean located 87 miles south of capital Managua, is very popular among surfers and is a vacation spot for many Nicaraguan families and foreign tourists.
