The WIPO background is a huge asset at IPRs On-line: after finishing her LL.M. at the Alicante University in Spain on 2007, María Alejandra was selected to work for the Arbitration and Mediation WIPO Center as a Case Manager.
“There, I learnt about a new and entire universe, named: Domain Names. I had the great opportunity to work among and with more than 25 extraordinary nationalities which makes me grow and understand how unique and vast a work place can be. I was fortunate to be surrounded by an extraordinary staff, which at the end has made of me a better person and IP professional, at such level, that by today, I have even become in a domain name panelist as well”, she explains.
With more than 500 domain name case administration, ADR knowledge and personal/professional international experience, she decided to create IPRs On-line, realizing that cybersquatting requires “full awareness”.
We sat down with María Alejandra, know as Alex, to explain a little more about the firm and its work throughout Latin America, of which will be informing more in following articles at Marcasur International.
In which countries IPRs On-line works?
IPRs On-line is based in Caracas, Venezuela, however due to our matters are intrinsically related to Internet, we cover the world.
Does IPRs On-line works directly with traditional IP firms?
Yes, and also domain name company businesses.
What happens when a certain case can’t be resolved through ADR methods? IPRs On-line does litigation?
Yes, we do it through our businesses allied, especially when it concerns to a specific ccTLD.
Which are the most typical services requested by Latin American clients?
At this stage we have found that most of the Latin American clients requires full awareness concerning the relationship between IP Assets + the Domain Name System and what specifically implies a cybersquatting case.
In comparison with other regions, is Latin America a step behind in in domain names and on-line trademarks matters through ADR methods?
In my very own opinion yes, due to the higher fees that are usually offered to solve a Case. That is why, we decided to bring it to our Region, share our experience and sophisticated knowledge in order to be “that hand who can assist/help”, and make it easier/possible to individuals, IP Law Firms and/or Companies.
