Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs to strengthen Peruvian IP

The executive president of the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property of Peru (Indecopi), Julián Palacín Gutiérrez, and the Swiss ambassador to Peru, on behalf of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), Paul Garnier, signed a memorandum of understanding in order to contribute to the strengthening of the Peruvian intellectual property system."Through this strategic alliance we will be able to support actors from the private, academic and civil society sectors so that they make better use of intellectual property rights for their growth," said Palacín Gutiérrez.
“A solid IP system is key to creating adequate conditions for the development of a competitive private sector and to promote innovation and the development of new goods and services, being a central element of the world trading system. We are pleased to ratify Switzerland's commitment to Peru in IP matters,” stated Garnier.
The agreement seeks to support Peruvian MSMEs to make better use of the patent and industrial design system, strengthen the Peruvian systems of appellations of origin, geographical indications and collective marks, promote greater knowledge of the creative industry and copyright , strengthen the capacities of indigenous peoples on their traditional knowledge of the biological resources of their environment, among others.
A second phase involves an investment of USD 1.5 million from SECO.
