The University of Costa Rica, the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in Costa Rica and the most important research university in the country and Central America, started a participatory process to generate its own regulation on intellectual property matters, intended to provide guidance to the university community during knowledge creation processes.“The protection of intellectual property at the University of Costa Rica is conceived as an instrument that contributes to the progress of sciences, arts, humanities and technologies, and their application for the Costa Rican economic, social and cultural reality,” the university said in a press release.
The announcement was made on April 26, 2021, when the World Intellectual Property Day 2021 was celebrated with focus on IP and small and medium sized enterprises. SMEs account for 90% of all companies worldwide and 70% of global employment. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is coordinating a global campaign to highlight the importance of intangible assets to SMEs and the value of IP in supporting SMEs to grow. The organization has published a series of case studies from around the world telling stories of SMEs that are using IP rights to turn ideas into business opportunities and generate value. WIPO has also provided a wealth of practical information on the best ways for SMEs to protect their intangible assets.
In such context the University of Costa Rica plans, through its future IP regulation, to link its academic and creative community with SMEs, private associations and government institutions to favor social inclusion, environmental sustainability, technological transformation and economic development.
