Trademark, patent and copyright protection in Mercado Libre

The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) of Peru has signed a trademark protection agreement with Mercado Libre, Latin America’s top e-commerce platform.

“Through this agreement, both institutions seek to protect the rights of trademarks, patents and copyrights in electronic commerce. Both institutions have compromise to carry out joint actions in order to safeguard in an effective, simple and agile manner, the rights of intellectual property in the digital environment,” Indecopi stated in a press release.

The region's most popular e-commerce site by number of visitors, Mercado Libre is an Argentine company incorporated in the United States that operates online marketplaces dedicated to e-commerce and online auction.

Indecopi will now have direct control and access in Peru to suspend Mercado Libre’s accounts and users that infringe IP rights, contributing to its main principle of consumers defense.
