Traditional use of coca

In its opening statement of the 2023 session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), the government of Bolivia asked the United Nations to remove coca leaves from its list of prohibited substances and accept the plant's traditional uses.
The CND supervises the application of the international drug control treaties and carried out its sixty-sixth session in Vienna, Austria, from March 13 to 17, 2023.
According to Reuters, Bolivia’s proposal is a bid to de-stigmatize conversations about the problem of drugs. Coca leaves are widely used in different countries in Latin America, especially by indigenous groups, to treat stomach aches and altitude sickness, among other ceremonial uses.
Bolivia will also request that the World Health Organization conduct a critical review of the coca leaf’s properties.
