Unauthorized use of 41 genetic resources of Peruvian origin

Since its creation in 2004, Peru’s National Commission against Biopiracy has identified a total of 246 cases of biopiracy in the patent system of various offices around the world. All cases are related to the unauthorized use of 41 genetic resources of Peruvian origin and traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples.

In 2022, 28 cases of biopiracy have been registered in the world related to the improper use of Peruvian genetic resources.
Among the cases of biopiracy of products of Peruvian origin detected are sangre de grado, maca, cashew tree, camu-camu, achiote, corn, uccuba butter, patawa, sacha inchi and costmary, among others.

Currently, Peru is processing the protection of these resources in patent offices in China, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Canada, Korea, Australia, the Philippines, Argentina and France.
