United States and Paraguay Cooperate to Strengthen IP Protection

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) conducted a series of activities in Paraguay to share experiences in patent granting and the application of international treaties regarding intellectual property (IP). The activities took place at the headquarters of Paraguay’s Intellectual Property Office (Dinapi).
USPTO officials shared experiences in the application of international treaties, such as the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Patent Cooperation Treaty.
Examiners from the Patent Office of Dinapi also attended a training workshop where the US experts presented general information about biotechnological patents, the analysis and studies required for their approval, and the patentability criteria imposed by US legislation.
The United States and Paraguay have a long history of cooperation on IP matters. The latest USTR Special 301 Report -an annual review of the global state of IP rights protection and enforcement in US partner countries- notes that Paraguay has made progress in improving its IP enforcement regime. However, the report also notes that there are still challenges, particularly in the areas of effective and consistent prosecutions and judicial actions.
The cooperation between the USPTO and Dinapi is a sign that the United States is committed to working with Paraguay to promote the protection and enforcement of IP rights. This is a positive development for both countries, as it will help to create a more secure and predictable environment for innovation and investment.
