University and industrial sector join forces for patent development
By Dumont
The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) joined the Confederation of Industrial Chambers (Concamin) to create a patent pool for the analysis and evaluation of those patents that may have commercial exploitation potential. The agreement allows patent owners to license one or more of their patents to one another. The UAM, a public university founded on 1974, offers 80 undergraduate and 108 graduate programs and has more than 100 laboratories, workshops, and pilot plants for research and lecturing. The university participates in institutional research programs and proposals with multidisciplinary projects, at the national and international level with the aim of contributing to Mexico's growth and development. It has filed 125 patent applications of which 12% have been submitted for an international patent application.
Both parties trust the positive and efficiency-enhancing effects of the new patent pool, such as sharing intellectual property assets, developing new products and reducing their transaction costs. Netzahualcóyotl Salvatierra López, Vice President of Concamin, pointed out that the agreement is necessary because in Mexico "there is still significant room to grow in the generation of added value and technological development." Concamin is the body that represents the industrial sectors and economic activities of high importance for the economic development of Mexico.
Some of the future areas of work are: Nanotechnology, Energy, Sustainable Development, Materials, Technology, Economics, Education, Rural and Urban Development, Anthropology, History and Culture, Administration, Sociology, Politics, Communication, International Relations, Health, Nutrition, Architecture and Design, amongst others.
