On July 11, 2024, Uruguay adhered to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) after a lengthy consultation process. According to the government, this decision, unanimously approved by both chambers of the Uruguayan Parliament, is expected to simplify the patenting process and reduce costs for domestic inventors and innovators seeking protection in other countries.
The PCT allows a single patent application to be recognized in up to 157 countries, offering Uruguayan inventions potential for international reach and commercialization. This accession is seen as a strategic move to bolster Uruguay's patent system and foster a more supportive environment for innovation.
The Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining (MIEM) played a key role in this achievement, alongside other national institutions working to align Uruguay's regulations with international standards.
