Uruguay Promotes Data Protection Awareness Through National Campaign
By Pittaluga Abogados

Uruguay’s Agency for Electronic Government and Information and Knowledge Society (Agesic) has launched a national campaign to raise awareness about personal data protection, in alignment with Law No. 18.331. The initiative is disseminated through various social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and LinkedIn, and seeks to promote key principles regarding the handling and safeguarding of personal information.
The campaign emphasizes the importance of individual rights in relation to personal data, such as the right to know which entities—public or private—are processing one’s data, the reasons behind such processing, and the ability to request its correction or deletion. In addition to public engagement efforts, Agesic offers online training on the official website of the Regulatory and Control Unit for Personal Data (URCDP), aimed at informing citizens about their rights and responsibilities under current legislation.
Agesic’s ongoing efforts also include in-person training for public officials, organizations, and designated data protection officers—roles that are increasingly essential within institutions managing personal information. The agency highlights that any individual who believes their data is being misused may file a formal complaint either online or in person at the URCDP office, located in the Executive Tower.
Through these activities, Uruguay continues to strengthen its national data protection framework, reinforcing the recognition of personal data rights as a fundamental constitutional guarantee and establishing clear obligations for both public and private entities.
