Uruguay ranks among the world’s top 10 free countries

Every year, Freedom House, a non-governmental organization with offices in Washington, D.C. and New York, issues an annual study on the state of political rights and civil liberties, which includes a global freedom ranking. For the 2017 edition of its flagship Freedom in the World report it assessed 195 countries and 14 territories around the globe, using the data gathered to build the freedom ranking. Of the 195 countries assessed, 87 (or 45%) were rated Free, 59 (30%) Partly Free, and 49 (25%) Not Free.

The top ten countries that enjoy the greatest degree of freedom are Finland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Uruguay, and Barbados.

Uruguay obtained an aggregate score of 98/100 and a score of 1 (the maximum) in the freedom category and 1 in the civil liberties and political rights category.
