Uruguay stands out in labor rights
By Pittaluga Abogados
Uruguay is the only non-European country in the top positions of the global index on labor rights. The extent to which these rights are violated each year is what the Global Rights Index (GRI) 2021 of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) analyzes, based on dismissals, violations of collective bargaining rights and restrictions on freedom of expression and meetings that are reported each year by 331 national unions from 163 countries.
Uruguay is the only non-European country in the top ten along with Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden. According to the GRI, in these countries violations of workers' rights are not non-existent, but they do not occur on a regular basis and collective labor rights are generally guaranteed.
