The Technological University of Panama (UTP) has taken a step in socially-oriented technological innovation by officially filing the invention patent titled “Smart Glasses for People with Visual Disabilities” with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) through the General Directorate of Industrial Property Registry (DIGERPI) on December 23, 2025.
This invention originated as a project developed during the Scientific Initiation Journey (JIC) at UTP’s Veraguas Regional Center, demonstrating the power of formative research to evolve into impactful solutions addressing real societal needs.
The Smart Glasses project is designed to support people with visual impairments by integrating technologies such as sensors and data processors that help users navigate their environment more safely, detect obstacles, and improve overall autonomy. This aligns with a broader global trend in assistive technologies that aim to enhance independence and quality of life for people with disabilities.
The patent submission was led by Rut Sierra, Intellectual Property Coordinator at the Directorate of Knowledge Management and Transfer (DGTC) at UTP, with technical support from the university’s Intellectual Property Unit. The process also involved a Patent Generation Workshop at the Veraguas Regional Center, coordinated by Mgter. Adiz Acosta, which provided participants with tools to develop and draft the patent application.
This institutional support highlights UTP’s commitment to protecting and promoting research outcomes and fostering a culture of innovation and intellectual property awareness among students and faculty.
Cecibel Castrellón, Director of Knowledge Management and Transfer at UTP, emphasized that the Smart Glasses invention is a concrete example of how academic institutions can contribute to inclusive development by integrating science, technology, and innovation to improve people’s lives. This achievement reinforces UTP’s role as a driver of innovation, inclusion, and knowledge transfer in service of societal needs.
