In a meeting held with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, Venezuela discussed its most recent achievements in the field of Intellectual Property and the common goals that are being worked together with the WIPO.“We mentioned the progress we have had in 2020, such as the application in October of the World Trade Organization's Agreement on Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) in relation to patents and trademarks,” stated Orlando Salazar, director of International Relations of the Autonomous Service of Intellectual Property (SAPI) of Venezuela.
The TRIPS Agreement, which came into effect globally on 1 January 1995, is to date the most comprehensive multilateral agreement on intellectual property. The agreement sets out the minimum standards of protection to be provided by each member. Each of the main elements of protection is defined, namely the subject-matter to be protected, the rights to be conferred and permissible exceptions to those rights, and the minimum duration of protection.
Salazar also highlighted the revision that Venezuela has made of international treaties, discussing with Mr. Tang the possibility of working towards more international collaborations in upcoming years, such as trainings of Venezuelan IP officials by the WIPO.
