Venezuela seeks to build 40 mechanical ventilators monthly from prototypes designed by local innovators, the Minister of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, stated.Minister Jiménez said in an interview for the Venezuelan state television company that local inventors are being evaluated by "a team of pulmonologists, intensivists and respiratory therapy specialists from the country's hospitals."
The official stressed that mechanical ventilators "were developed with free software and hardware, which allows us not to depend on licenses and patents."
The project is part of the lines of research developed by the Venezuelan State in combating the pandemic of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Jiménez indicated that Venezuela has also developed a line of action around the use of blood plasma from patients recovered from COVID-19 to assist in the treatment of patients in medium and critical condition.
