Venezuela has officially granted the avocado produced in the state of Yaracuy a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI/IGP) certification, recognizing the fruit’s exceptional quality, creamy texture, and long-standing agricultural tradition.
The announcement was made by Venezuelan authorities as part of a broader initiative to protect and promote products that represent the country’s cultural and agricultural identity. The Yaracuy avocado earned the certification because of its outstanding quality, especially creamy and flavorful.
The Protected Geographical Indication seal certifies that a product possesses unique characteristics linked to a specific region and its traditional production methods. In the case of Yaracuy’s avocados, the recognition highlights more than 70 years of cultivation history in the region.
The certification was granted through Venezuela’s Autonomous Intellectual Property Service (SAPI), in coordination with the Ministry of National Commerce. Authorities say the initiative aims to strengthen local economies, support farmers, and preserve Venezuela’s gastronomic heritage.
With this distinction, the Yaracuy avocado joins a growing list of Venezuelan products protected under geographical indication status, including several regional coffees, cacao varieties, traditional cheeses, and other emblematic foods.
Officials emphasized that the certification not only protects producers from imitation products, but also helps position Venezuelan agricultural goods in national and international markets, promoting sustainable regional development and safeguarding traditional farming culture.
