Webinar on Geographical Indications and New Registration Developments
By Dannemann Siemsen

The Dannemann Siemsen Institute (IDS) will host an online roundtable on November 3 to discuss recent developments in geographical indication registration procedures in Brazil, as well as new projects at the country’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).
Entitled “Geographical Indications at the Brazilian PTO: New Projects and Recent Updates,” the event will begin at 10 a.m. Brasília time (UTC−3) and is part of a webinar series organized by IDS in collaboration with INPI. The series examines improvements and initiatives developed by INPI’s Directorate of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (DIRMA).
Following an initial session dedicated to trademarks, the second edition will focus on recent changes to geographical indication registration procedures, ongoing projects within the relevant coordination unit, and their practical implications for users of Brazil’s intellectual property system.
The discussion will feature two INPI representatives. Alexandre Lopes Lourenço, Director of DIRMA, has worked as an Industrial Property researcher since 2007. His experience includes patent examination, technical cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean, and industrial property intelligence. He has also served as Acting Director of Patents.
Pablo Ferreira Regalado, General Coordinator for Geographical Indications at DIRMA/INPI, holds a PhD in Intellectual Property and Innovation from INPI, where he has worked since 2004. He assumed his current position in February 2026.
Elisabeth Siemsen do Amaral, a partner and member of Dannemann Siemsen’s Board of Directors and an IDS counselor, will deliver the opening remarks. Rafael Atab, a partner at the firm and an IDS counselor, will moderate the discussion. Both were involved in inviting the INPI representatives to participate.
The roundtable will provide an opportunity for intellectual property professionals, businesses and other stakeholders to learn more about current initiatives and the evolving framework for geographical indications in Brazil.
