WIPO awards Nicaragua with the Medal for Creativity

By Guy José Bendaña-Guerrero & Asociados

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) awarded to Nicaragua the Medal for Creativity, recognizing the legacy made to universal culture by world known poet Ruben Darío.

"WIPO celebrates the creativity of Ruben Darío and the huge importance of his legacy to Nicaraguan, Latin American and universal culture, as the major initiator of the modernism movement in literature," said the representative of WIPO Silvia Vincenti, during the ceremony at the Ruben Darío National Theater located at Managua.

A self-funding agency of the United Nations with 188 member states, WIPO is the global forum for IP services, policy, information and cooperation. Its Medal for Creativity is offered to those individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the cultural, social and economic development in the field of copyright and related rights.

Darío, a Nicaraguan poet, was born in Metapa, today known as Ciudad Darío. He was the poet who initiated the Spanish-American literary movement known as modernismo (modernism), that flourished at the end of the 19th century and was of great influence in the whole Hispanic world.
