The Internet Day celebration was first held on Latin America on October 25, 2005, as an initiative of the Spanish Association of Internet Users (AUI). Later, at its plenary session held on March 27, 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations approved designating May 17 as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
The day contributes to increase worldwide knowledge of the Internet and assess its cultural and socioeconomic importance, in order to transform the Web into a truly global facility available to all public. Moreover, the celebration and its activities opens for more people new access possibilities to information and communication technologies (ICT).
El Salvador has a technical office, represented by the Connection Association for El Salvador Development, which aims to promote socialization, knowledge and use of ICT in the country, particularly the Internet.
Each year the country celebrates the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day through a coordinated organization based on four pillars: the Connection Association for El Salvador Development, in charge of coordination and planning; an Impulse Committee formed by the most relevant social actors (associations, federations, universities, schools, government institutions and municipalities, among others); promoters and sponsors, which arrange all events and activities; and finally the media, to help communicate, broadcast and transmit all activities.
