Yaracuy Avocado Secures Venezuela's First Protected Geographical Indication
By Enrique Cheang, E.C.V. & Asociados

Venezuela has achieved a significant milestone in its agricultural sector by granting the first Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) to the Yaracuy Avocado. This designation, awarded by the Servicio Autónomo de la Propiedad Intelectual (SAPI), formally acknowledges the unique characteristics and regional provenance of this culturally significant fruit. The PGI, a form of intellectual property right, signifies that the Yaracuy Avocado possesses qualities and a reputation attributable to its geographical origin, specifically the state of Yaracuy, Venezuela.
The application process, initiated by the Civil Association of Agricultural Producers Aguabas, included the submission and analysis of comprehensive technical documentation, encompassing:
-Technical Reports: Detailed agricultural production data, including cultivation practices and environmental factors.
-Microbiological and Physicochemical Laboratory Analyses: Scientific evaluations of the avocado's composition and safety.
-Organoleptic Analysis: Sensory evaluations of the avocado's aroma, flavor, and texture.
-Specifications and Usage Regulations: Guidelines for production and marketing to ensure adherence to PGI standards.
-Formation of a Regulatory Council: A body responsible for overseeing the implementation and enforcement of the PGI.
The Yaracuy Avocado distinguishes itself through its exceptional organoleptic profile. It exhibits a unique blend of herbal and fruity aromas, complemented by a complex flavor profile encompassing sweet, bitter, and umami notes, with subtle hints of nuts and almonds. Its creamy, yet slightly aqueous, texture further contributes to its distinctiveness. The state of Yaracuy, recognized as Venezuela's premier avocado-producing region, cultivates 23 avocado varieties, with 12 highly prized for their market value.
The Yaracuy Avocado PGI is expected to enhance market access, both domestically and internationally. By signifying quality and origin, the PGI provides a competitive advantage, attracting consumers who value authentic and regionally specific products. This initiative is intended to bolster Venezuela's agribusiness sector and contribute to the diversification of its export portfolio, positioning the Yaracuy Avocado as a key non-traditional export product.
